Paparazzi. Reaching through

The lens is 27 inches,

measured diagonally.

On days when I’m trapped inside,

it shows me the world outside.

I feel like my failures

eternally circle the drain,

while the lens shines its joy,

into all the corners around me.

Social media. Social, no. Media?

Paparazzi. Reaching through

the lens to question me

about my failings and fears.

“Why are you unhappy?”

“The Joneses are fine!”

“Keep up, or die!”

I’m not well, so I succumb,

to the illusion that numbs,

my mind to the truth.

Trapped in the gears,

is the certainty,

that all is not well

with the Joneses.

But, damn, they look so happy.

The paparazzi showed me,

with their tablets and memes.
